Heroic resistance recorded in history of

independence, democracy and reunification

Now the south Korean people mark the 28^th anniversary of Gwangju Popular Uprising at the time when the Korean nation’s will for national independence, peace against war and reunification is getting higher.

Students and citizens in Gwangju put up a popular resistance on May 18, 1980 with arms in their hands against the US and Chun Doo Hwan military junta which crushed burgeoning democracy after the fall of the Yushin dictatorship.

The resistance was a heroic deed that recorded in the history of liberation in the East. They put the Gwangju city under their control for ten days and dealt a serious blow to the colonial rule of the US. It was a watershed of history which developed the democratic movement against fascism to independent movement against the US.

The resistance dealt a fatal blow to the colonial rule of the US and military junta of south Korea and was a laudable deed that demonstrated the indomitable will of the south Korea people for independence, democracy and reunification throughout the world.

By the resistance, south Korea turned into an area against the US and the south Korean people’s independence movement against the US and reunification greeted a new turning point.

The south Koreans have made successes through ceaseless struggle since the resistance.

However, their wish for independence, democracy and reunification remained unsolved.

The US, which turned the city into a blood bath and a city of death, behaves like master in south Korea and commit criminal acts such as murder and rape without hesitation. The Lee Myung-bak regime, which is crazy about nuclear war against north Korea and have ideas of pro-sycophancy dependence on foreign force and anti-north Korean confrontation to the core, makes desperate efforts to turn the June 15 reunification era to the confrontation age of the past.

Owing to the policy of confrontation and war maneuvers of the Lee regime and the pro-US conservative forces that follow the US hostile policy towards north Korea, the provocation of nuclear war is a matter of time and the inter-Korean relations faced grave challenge.

Facts prove that the desire of the Gwangju uprisers for independence, democracy and reunification cannot be realized without purging the pro-US conservative forces that makes frantic efforts to revive the confrontation era of the past.

The south Korean people should accelerate the struggle for democracy against fascism as they did.

The south Koreans from all walks of life should turn out in the struggle for peace against war and withdrawal of the US troops from south Korea with the spirit of the uprisers and intensify the struggle against the Lee regime and the pro-US conservative forces that tries to revive the past age.
