Mounting struggle against the US and war in south Korea

Now the south Korean people from all walks of life dynamically wage the struggle against the US-south Korea joint military exercises.

Civic organizations of south Korea including the People for Peace and Reunification, the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification and the Reunification Square held the 76^th rally for peace and disarmament in Seoul on February 26. Speakers at the rally urged the bellicose force to immediately stop the exercises as they chill the atmosphere for peace in the Korean Peninsula.

The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Nimitz anchored in a naval base in Busan on February 28 to participate in the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle joint military exercises. In this regard, more than 100 civic organizations in Busan held a joint news conference and strongly demanded immediate return of the carrier.

The south Korean Federation of University Student Councils issued a statement titled “The US forces in south Korea should suspend military exercises against north Korea threatening the peace on the Korean Peninsula and get out of this land immediately.” In the statement, it said that it would never tolerate any action disturbing peace and reunification and deal a serious blow to those who check the advance of the Korean nation. It continued that it would intensify the struggle to drive out the GIs from south Korea and devote their all to build a reunified country, a long cherished desire of the Korean nation.

Members of civic organizations including the Solidarity for Progress in south Korea, the People for Peace and Reunification and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions held a news conference in front of the commanding office of the south Korea-US Combined Command on March 2 to protest against the US-south Korea joint military exercises against north Korea.

Saying that the military drills against north Korea being conducted according to the US strategy and operation plan would bring military tension and national annihilation in the Korean Peninsula, the statement noted that the war exercises running counter to peace and reconciliation should be suspended at once.

The organizations held a demonstration, chanting slogans “Stop war exercises threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula” after the news conference.
