Statement of AINDF spokesman

Today the south Korean people mark the 27^th anniversary of the Gwangju Popular Uprising at the time when the independent struggle against foreign forces is intensified across south Korea

The youth and students and people from all walks of life in Gwangju on May 18, 1980 turned out in a struggle with arms in their hands with pent-up grudge against the US and Chun Doo Hwan military fascist regime which ruthlessly trampled down the bud of democracy which was come into with the end of the Yushin dictatorship

800, 000 citizens took Gwangju under the control for ten days. The uprising was a patriotic deed which left a brilliant record in the history of modern liberation struggle of the East and a watershed which turned the anti-fascist democratic movement into the anti-US independent movement in south Korea.

The uprising dealt a serious blow to the colonial rule of US and military fascist dictatorship and powerfully demonstrated the unbreakable will of the Korean people desirous of independence, democracy and reunification.

Consequently, south Korea, where a quite place for the US, turned into an intensive place against the US. The anti-US independent reunification movement of the south Korean people ushered in a fresh turning-point. 

However, the desire of the uprisers has not yet been realized. 

The US still inflicts fate of colonial slavery upon the south Korean people, occupying this land.

The US murderers, who turned Gwangju into a “bathroom of blood” and a “city of death,” committed horrendous crimes across south Korea and trample upon sovereign rights of the south Koreans.

Especially, the US makes frantic efforts to cook up the pro-US regime by rallying and wire-pulling the pro-US conservatives, the remnants of military fascist dictatorship, with an ambition to maintain its colonial system in south Korea forever. It pursues war maneuvers against north Korea and drives the situation on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war, running counter to the June 15 era.         

Of late, it pushes forward “the plan of relocating the US military bases” including the building of a military base in Gunsan and massively shops into modern military hardware.

Facts prove that independence, democracy and reunification desired by the Gwangju uprisers cannot be realized and elementary fruition of democracy gained through bloody struggle cannot be defended without liquidation of the US and its followers who try to revive the dark age of fascism and the past Cold War era against north Korea.       

The south Koreans should accelerate the anti-US independent struggle succeeding the noble spirit of the Gwangju uprisers. 

The people from all walks of life should turn out in the struggle against the US and war and for withdrawal of the US troops from south Korea with the fighting spirit and soul of the uprisers and, holding high the banner of the great alliance against the conservatism, resolutely frustrate the wild ambition of the pro-US conservatives including the GNP which makes frantic efforts to revive the dark age of fascism, dictatorship and national division.

They should also frustrate vicious moves of the anti-reunification forces at home and abroad and maintain the June 15 era by accelerating the three tasks of attaching importance to the nation, maintaining peace and achieving unity under the ideal of “By our nation itself.”

The AINDF, together with the people from all social standings who want to live with patriotism, will bring about an independent, democratic and reunified society without foreign forces and the pro-US traitors by intensifying the struggle to realize the desire of the May 18 Gwangju uprisers.
