Briefs on the struggle of the south Korean people

= Struggle for implementing the June 15 inter-Korean joint declaration

June 5- An Oceanian function marking the sixth anniversary of the June 15 joint declaration was held in Sidney under the sponsorship of the Oceanian Regional Committee for the Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration.   

June 9- The headquarters of youth and students of the South Side Committee for Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration held the 5^th inaugural ceremony in Seoul and called for the youth and students to take the lead in the struggle for reunification movement.

June 10- A proclamation ceremony urging to institute the June 15 as the commemoration day of the joint declaration was held in a hall in Seoul. Members of civic organizations, students and Seoul citizens participated in the ceremony.

June11- A function for peace and reunification marking the 6^th anniversary of the publication of the inter-Korean joint declaration was held under the sponsorship of the Cheju Province Headquarters of the South Side Committee for Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration.     

June 12- The headquarters of workers, peasants, women and youth and students of the South Side Committee for Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration held a joint news conference in Seoul and demanded the south Korean authorities institute June 15 as the commemoration day of the joint declaration.

June15- The South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification had a “meeting for the patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity on June 15, the day of “by our nation itself” in Gwangju. Participating there were more than 700 members of the alliance.  

=Anti-US and anti-war struggle

June7- A cultural function for checking the expansion of the US military base in Pyeongtaek and the south Korea-US Free Trade Agreement was held under the participation of more than 2,000 members of civic organizations, men of arts and literature, students and citizens.   

June 9- The People for Peace and Reunification held a new conference in front of the Ministry of Defense, demanding stop of the introduction of US fighters.  

- The Headquarters of the All-People Movement for Checking the south Korea-US Free Trade Agreement held a “funeral ”of the FTA in Seoul.

June 10- A candlelight memorial service was held in Seoul upon the lapse of four years since two schoolgirls were killed by a US armored vehicle.

June 12- The People’s Action against the Dispatch of Troops held a news conference in front of the US Embassy in Seoul at which it denounced the US forces’ massacre of civilians in Iraq and demanded an immediate withdrawal of the south Korean troops from Iraq. 

June 13- The General Federation of the Student Councils of Gyeonggi National University made public a statement on the lapse of four years since two schoolgirls were killed by a US armored vehicle.

- The 81^st anti-US solidarity rally was held at a park in Seoul with the attendance of members of the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification, the All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base in Pyeongtaek and the Headquarters of the All-People Movement for Checking the south Korea-US Free Trade Agreement.

=Struggle for democracy and the right to live

June 6- Members of the All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base in Pyeongtaek and residents of Pyeongtaek, staged a protest in front of the police station to denounce the authorities’ suppression upon the people.

June 8- Mun Chung-hyun, co-representative of the All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base in Pyeongtaek staged an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Cheong Wa Dae, the Presidential Mansion, in protest against the government’s suppression upon the people.

June 9- The south Korean Federation of University Student Councils issued a statement titled “We denounce the Ministry of Defense that arrested a representative of the inhabitants.”

June10- The US-based Internet homepage “Minjok Tongshin” carried an article that the progressive reform forces demand the abolition of the National Security Law.

June 13- The south Korean Federation of University Student Councils released a statement denouncing the government for having taken an unreasonable measure to bar delegates of overseas Koreans from participating in the June 15 grand festival for national reunification.

June13~14- The Federation of Korean Trade Unions held a memorial service for the chief of a branch office who struggled for the three rights of labor for the part-timers
