Ever-serious environmental pollution in the US military base

 

Recently a south Korean environmental body made public a result of pollution level in the US military bases it conducted last year.

According to a result, 14 places out of 15 exceeded soil pollution level, in particular, oil and lead pollution reached over 100 times than permitted limit so that the soil became a barren land.

According to a survey conducted by professors of medicine at Dankook University among 917 residents living around the US military base in Pyeongtaek, majority of the residents suffer diseases including heart trouble, psychosis and hypertension. In particular, an outbreak of melancholia, autism and schizophrenia among the pupils in Pyeongtaek hit eight times compared to other regions. It is said that a child out of four children living around the US helicopter landing field suffer insomnia.

According to an interim report released by the USFK and the south Korean authorities, environmental pollution in the US military bases in North Jeolla Province and its vicinity become a serious problem.

In particular, the soil pollution by oil reached 26 times compared to standard level and underground water pollution exceeded the three times.

   To the south Korean people the USFK is a source of misfortune and agony. The south Korean people should turn out in the struggle for the withdrawal of the US troops from south Korea.
