Briefs on the struggle of the south Korean people

= Struggle for implementing the June 15 inter-Korean joint declaration

Jan.1- The Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration issued an article titled “Let us make 2006 a year of victory opening a turning point of national reunification.”

- The Gwangju-South Jeolla Provincial Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration made public a New Year resolution, holding that it would take the lead in the struggle for independent reunification this year.

Jan.3- The Daejeon-South Chungcheong Provincial Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration issued a New Year resolution titled “Let us direct all our energies to open a turning point of national reunification.”

Jan.5- The Seoul Area Federation of University Students Councils under the south Korean Federation of University Students Councils released a New year resolution titled “Let us kindle a torch for building a reunified country.” The Gwangju-South Jeolla Provincial Federation of University Students Councils held a New Year meeting and made public a resolution. The resolutions called upon the youth and students to carve out the destiny of the nation by taking the lead in the struggle for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity.       

Jan.6- A New Year gathering was held in Seoul under the sponsorship of the Reunification Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration and Peace of the Korean Peninsula. The participants called upon various civic organizations to form a united front of solidarity.

- The south Korean Federation of University Students Councils held a meeting of its Central Committee and released a declaration titled “Let us make a general march toward a new society for independence, democracy and reunification full of fresh confidence and optimism!”

Jan.7- The Busan-South Gyeongsang Provincial Federation of University Students Councils under the south Korean Federation of University Students Councils issued a New Year resolution titled “Let us make victorious 2006 with a greater innovation and leap.” It called upon the youth and students to mark this year a year of national independence, peace on the Korean Peninsula and great national unity.

Jan.11- Park Hee-jin, planning director of the youth and students headquarters under the South Side’s Committee for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration held a news conference, calling upon the youth and students to take the lead in the struggle for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity.  

  =Anti-US and anti-war struggle

Jan.7- Students under the south Korean Federation of University Students Councils held an anti-US rally around the US embassy in Seoul. The protesters shouted slogans “The US withdraw its hostile policy toward north Korea” and “The US ambassador, go out of this land,” carrying anti-US propaganda materials in their hands.

Jan.10- The 76^th anti-US and solidarity rally was held at a park in Seoul with the presence of members of civic organizations including the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification, the People for Peace and Reunification, the Pyeongtaek Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base, the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy, the Anti-US Youth League and the Korean Catholic Priests’ Council for Justice.

- The US-based Internet homepage of Koreans “Minjok Tongshin” posted its editor’s article censuring preposterous words of the US administration officials that despair the dignity of north Korea.

Jan.12- The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions checked the US ambassador’s participation of a news conference.

Jan.13- The All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base in Pyeongtaek held a news conference in front of the US embassy in Seoul. It strongly demanded the United States immediately stop expanding its military base in Pyeongtaek and expropriating the land.

Jan.14- The 500^th day candlelight rally was held at an elementary school in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province under the sponsorship of the All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base in Pyeongtaek. 

 =Struggle for democracy and the right to live

Jan.5- The Family Movement for Realizing Democracy held the 600^th Thursday rally in Seoul, demanding release of the prisoners of conscience and abolition of the National Security Law.

Jan.6- The south Korean Federation of University Students Councils held a meeting of its Central Committee and announced a resolution on struggle for campus independence.

Jan.9- Students of Yonsei University held a news conference to make a protest against the university expenses increase.

Jan.13- A rally for dismantlement of the Grand National Party was held in front of the headquarters of the GNP under the sponsorship of the Seoul Area Federation of University Students Councils under the south Korean Federation of University Student Councils.    

- A memorial service for Park Jong-chol, who was tortured to death by the south Korean fascist hangmen, was held in Seoul with the attendance of members of civic organizations and students.
