The atmosphere of the anti-US for
independence and
national co-operation mount in south
Korea
Only 22 percent of south Koreans said that they
disaffirm the US and 20 percent advocated independent diplomacy in the 1990s.
However, after the publication of the inter-Korean
joint declaration, 50 percent of south Koreans regard the US as a big obstacle
to Korea¡¯s reunification and 64 percent demand pursuance of independence in
relations between the US. Meanwhile, the south Koreans said that south Korea
should define the US as an arch enemy not north Korea. On the other hand, only
35 percent assert ¡°strengthening of south Korea-US alliance¡± and it decreased 25
percent before the publication of the South-North Joint Declaration.
More than 13,000 anti-US struggles had been waged
with attendance of more than 20 million people during five years in south Korea
and it is unprecedented in terms of scale and wide-spreadness.
Recently the south Korean authorities is examining its
foreign policy of rejecting the US, saying that the US double-faced thought is
not conducive to the solution of the Korean Peninsula and nobody cannot force its
unilateral intention to other countries. The US clamors that the south Korea-US
strategic foundation is destroyed and cracks are made in the south Korea-US
alliance.
Cooperation between the south and the north of Korea
has increased more than ever before.
Despite the obstructive moves of the ultra-right
forces of south Korea, the south Korean people of all social standings
vigorously conduct multifarious functions and struggle for national unity and
reunification, saying that the Korean people should solve the nuclear issue
with the US and realize independent reunification with concerted efforts of the
Korean people. Politicians of the ruling and opposition parties irrespective of
idea and political view participated the June 15 and August 15 national
festivals for national reunification. The civic and the government authorities¡¯
demand for taking preference to the inter-Korean relations overwhelm the assertion
of ¡°south Korea-US alliance¡± and 34 percent of the south Koreans said that the
south should give military aid to north Korea if a war breaks out between the
north and the US.
